mini note: it's national banana day?
apparently... and definitely don't do this with your banana peels
Maybe National Banana Day isn’t a real thing, but the internet told me it was true so… (ok, that doesn’t mean sh*t). But it did remind me to remind you not to make banana peel compost tea. I’ve tried it. And it was a disaster.
To be clear, I’m talking about the “let it sit on your counter for two days and it turns into a plant nutrient miracle” kind of banana peel compost tea. That’s a fraud. Maybe AI told us it was true. AI can be wrong. (Let’s stash that away in our long-term memory.)
If you want to make a fancy, aerated banana compost tea for your outdoor garden and you’re a compost tea guru, I bet you can make it work. But that repurposed pasta jar filled with banana peels and water breeds more fungus gnats than soil microbes. And yet, it still keeps making the rounds on social media. Ugh… 🫠🤯
In any case, here are some better things to do with your banana peels:
Eat them in this banana peel stir fry. Don’t knock it ‘til you try it apparently. Or just put them in a smoothie.
This banana cardamom bread was delicious! Then I put the peels in my backyard compost bin.
And if you want to compost them but don’t have your own bin, this electric composter will do the work for you in less than 24 hours. I use it every day, and I’m a fan!
Keep crushin’ those green goals, hopefully without a side of fungus gnats.

Jen
